Greetings to you all!
I have known Didi for many years now and I have been quite touched by the care that she continues to show all the people she brings to Costa Rica for cosmetic procedures. So it is no wonder that I am excited to be offering my services as an Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist to support you and your body in the weeks prior to the procedure and in the months following it.
How Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs Can Help You Before and after Cosmetic Surgery
As you have no doubt read the extensive information that Didi and Dr. Lev have on this website, this may be cosmetic surgery, but it is still surgery, which is always difficult on the body and mind.
For 3000 years, the Chinese have been using Acupuncture and herbs to treat all kinds of illnesses and conditions, and to promote health and wellness. Much of your ability to handle the surgery in a smooth and complication-free manner depends on your current state of health.
Before Surgery
In the weeks prior to your trip, I will work with you to help you support any weak areas of your constitution and clear any areas of stagnation. For example:
- Sleep: How is your sleep? Is it hard to get to sleep? Is it hard to stay asleep? The time of the day when our body does most of its own healing is while we are in a deep sleep. If you are unable to attain that quality of sleep, your ability to heal may be slowed.
- Digestion: Do you get bloated easily after meals? Do you frequently burp or have gas? How's your appetite? All of these signs and symptoms suggest a weakened digestive system. Our ability to recover from illness or the trauma of a surgical procedure depends very much on our ability to get strength and energy from our food.
- Bowel Movements: How often do you move your bowels? Most people are surprised to find out that what they consider to be "normal" is not actually so. It is in the bowels that we extract nutrients and water from our food and excrete waste. An increase in bowel transit time, i.e. diarrhea, means you are not absorbing those nutrients and therefore getting little benefit from the food you eat. And a slowed transit time, i.e. constipation, means you are not getting rid of the waste and so toxins can build up, further impairing your ability to heal. Whether you are undergoing a facial, breast or abdominal procedure, the main channels and therefore organ systems you are dealing with are the Stomach and Large Intestine-- the bowels. If we keep these organs happy, the channels will circulate blood to the affected areas more smoothly, potentially making your healing time from these procedures that much faster.
- Pain: Do you experience any type of pain or discomfort in any part of your body? Your low back, abdomen, shoulders or neck? Is it sharp and specific or dull and diffuse? Perhaps it's heavy and worsens with rainy weather? Regardless of the quality of pain, it is the result of poor circulation of qi, or energy, and blood that can contribute to or stem from other types of stagnation like inefficient digestion, old injuries, organ imbalance and even stress. Your channels are like garden hoses, and when circulation is impaired, it's like getting them knotted or clogged: water backs up before the knot swelling the hose which brings pain; water does not move at the knot, bringing pain; and water does not flow to the areas after the knot depriving those areas of the nourishment that water can bring, which can also lead to pain. As acupuncture channels run through out the body, pain in one area can impair circulation to other areas. Acupuncture and herbal treatments can effectively promote the smooth flow of qi and blood in an effort to untie those knots and remove those clogs, which in the end reduces pain and discomfort. And when your circulation is good, when we can balance your internal environment before the procedure, then your ability to recover from the trauma after procedure becomes that much quicker and smoother.
As you can see from the Treatment Plans below, I have included two that begin two months before you leave. Though all herbs and supplements are to be stopped two weeks prior to your surgery, as per Dr. Lev's and my recommendations, this will still allow us an optimal amount of time for a thorough course of Acupuncture AND Chinese Herbal formula treatments-- the combination of the two is the most effective way to address your health concerns and will, therefore, best prepare you for your procedure. But no matter which plan you choose, you and your body will be better prepared for the journey you are about to take.
After Surgery
Regardless of the type of cosmetic procedure you undergo-- facial, breast, or abdominal-- healing time can, on average, be 6 months, but can be up to 12 months. As this site states, the estimates are that 80% of the swelling is gone within 3-4 weeks, bruising 1-2 weeks, numbness several months, and pain several weeks. This can be a difficult time to go through, as you look in the mirror and begin to feel impatient, waiting for the reflection to reveal the changes you have been dreaming about.
In Acupuncture and herbal treatments with me, the goal will be incredibly clear: reduce the time it takes to heal. We will be very specific in working on increasing circulation to the affected body part in order to decrease inflammation, bruising, numbness, scarring and pain. All the while, we will continue to support the body to do what it is naturally designed to do--heal.
